Guilherme’s wooden board from Brazil

Guilherme Pallerosi lives in Brasil.  He likes to surf on and to make ancients boards. He has started a blog to tell surf history and research techniques to build the old wooden surfboards. ” Its in the beginnings, but you can see at: http://madeiraeagua.blogspot.com/ (its Portuguese)
I would like to post in your blog my blog address and the photos of a board I´ve made. (I have more photos on the blog )”

Guilherme has a different approach to building his boards , as it appears he laminates the ply to achieve the rocker in his boards and then shapes and foils it to achieve the final shape.A very interesting way of doing things.

The finished board has quite a different look. It may be a little heavy depending on the ply used and the amount of timber left. It would be good to hear from him on this. There are many ways to build a wooden board and it is great to see the different approaches people use depending on their experience and tools or situation they have to work with.

Hollow wooden board

I have received an email from a lady who has this board and would like to find out more about it.
” Hi Grant,   just wondering if it would be worth coming to the Gold Coast at your meetings all about boards, as I have an old board that I would like some information on , this one could be 1930′s Hollow 3 metres x 500 and in good condition it is only now taking on water so we retired it, but was going to fix it until the surf guy said if I were you find more information, my son was given the board 7 years ago by a good old (94year old) neighbour, she used it to collect crabs in the peel inlet near Mandurah W.A. for many years. We currently live in S.A and its too big to bring to the meeting. Have attached photos   Regards  Ann and Byron Bruce.   email  annbyron@adam.com.au “

So if you have any info you could contribute to this board or type of board could you help Ann and Byron out by contacting them.

The ultimate board test

Great looking wave…. check out the story below.

” A few weeks back we were visited by two really great guys, Tyler Fox and Jon Free. They run a local website called “Santa Cruz Waves” which is a really cool site geared toward the Santa Cruz surf scene as well as local restaurants, music, and so on. They stopped in to do a short article on their website about our boards, and to share what they are working towards with their website. Fox was really eager to try out a board, so we told him to stop by anytime and we would go for a surf. A few days later the swell picked up to 16′ on the buoy. Fox showed up at our shop in the afternoon, straight from an early morning surf at Mavericks, and suggested that we go catch a few. I gave him my personal board, a 9’0″ Redwood glider, and I took out my 7′ Birch hull. He surfed the board amazingly and gave some great feedback on the design. It was the best day we’ve had in town all year, no wind, 80 degree weather, and pumping surf.”

Now I think you are convinced that wooden boards can perform.

The Glider is built for forward trim surfing, quick turning, and down-the-line effortless speed. It can be ridden in two foot soup, or overhead surf.

The deck is built from scrap poplar, and some very special redwood. The redwood was given to us by our good friend Alberto (aka Birdo). Alberto cleared a small grove of trees up in Bonny Doon some 30 years ago to help his godfather build a workshop. The leftover wood was milled, stacked, and left to cure until now.

The Huon Pine board

The timber work was done by Pat Lyon at Currumbin Wood Works.

Dick Van Straalen shaped this beautiful Huon Pine board for Carl Tanner to add to his impressive collection of boards

Dick admiring the outcome…. nice

A great result from a collaboration of mates with a desire to build something very special and rare.

Hollow wooden board building class with Paul Jensen in San Francisco.

Paul Jensen , just got back from a trip down to San Francisco for a small HWS class… ” We built two small fish, one big fish and a couple of longboards…

Our shop space was great, an i-Pad case factory with a lot of room to move…Nice……

I shuffled the class hours a bit…The first three days were 9AM to 5PM…The final two days were from 2PM to 10PM…The late start gave a feeling of having a at least a half day off…I surfed, others went into work…I’ll do that again…

The workshop participants were all very keen, had heaps of skills and great life experiences to share during our long hours together…We all had a lot of laughs and everyone went home with boards ready to glass…”

If this is what you would like to do get hold of Paul and organise a class for yourself and a few friends.

Tiki and his first wooden board.

Keith Nevelee or “Tiki” as everyone knows him as brought along a great looking chambered Paulownia board that has become his regular ride.He has since sent a selection of shots of the build process to share.

Here is the board at home leaning against a Paulownia tree.

Solid Paulownia tow board

I found Roger Halls solid Paulownia board a very impressive mix of shape style and engineering. An intimidating piece of gear to say the least. I mean if you were strapping this on for your next wave you were in for a hell of a ride. Just like looking at a big wave gun by Dick Brewer for me. Long , lean , fast and mean , built for the keen.
