” Always Offshore” from WA.

Just had a call from Gary Bennett from Western Australia who is coming over with a few boards for the Wooden Board Day. He is a furniture maker and keen surfer. He has worked on a few projects with surfboard shaper Jim Banks from Byron. Check out some of his boards and boards inspired furniture.

“Always offshore” is Jahroc’s latest collaborative project where Gary Bennett, David Paris and Australian surfing and shaping legend Jim Banks have decided to pool their extensive skills to create a collection of fine wooden surfboards. By combining Jim’s 30+ years of surfboard design and shaping skills with Gary and Dave’s 30+ years of designing and creating furniture masterpieces crafted from fine Australian timbers, the trio believe they can create some of the finest wooden surfboards the world has seen. Some will be artistic wall pieces made from solid timber and others will be artistic wall pieces that can also be surfed on using the age old torsion box construction techniques that have been used in aircraft, surfboards, boats and furniture for centuries.
Wooden surfboards are really where it all began and there are certainly lots of replica’s being made these days. Jim and Gary wanted to do things a little differently and apply the contemporary lines of Jim’s surfboard designs to create some collectable art pieces made from some of our beautiful locally grown timbers in Australia.
Jim still takes a very hands on approach to his shaping and is constantly testing and improving his designs in waves all over the world. From Indo perfection to the raw power of Margaret River Jim is constantly putting his designs to the test. Gary and Dave are excited by the opportunity to use their skills and contemporary techniques of fine timber construction and apply to making surfboards.
Surf boards are such beautiful objects. All three artists are passionate surfers so the idea of sculpting a masterpiece that can be taken down from the wall, waxed up, then taken down to the beach for a surf and still be durable enough to be hung back up on the wall is immensely appealing.
Why “Always Offshore”? Well when it’s offshore at the beach the boys can go for a surf and get that buzz that surfers get. When the surf’s not on they can go to their workshop and get that buzz that woodworkers get when creating, so you see for these 3 it really is “always offshore”!!
The collection, when complete, will feature some hollow torsion box versions that will be surfable. All going well the boys should have a collection ready to exhibit in March 2010. Keep an eye on this page to check the progress on this upcoming exhibition.”

Newquay Surfer’s photos from Nike 6.0 cash for tricks

This year’s night surf event was sponsored by Nike 6.0 and held at Fistral beach, Newqauay on the 8-9th of July. As part of the event a ‘Cash for tricks’ competition was run – this format encourages surfers to try out radical manoeuvres, with their best 3 moves counted as the surfers overall score.

Local surfers Alan Stokes, Oli Adams, Johnny Fryer and Bude’s Reubyn Ash were there to rip and entertain in small Fistral surf. Simply click on the thumbnail images below for the larger version.

[Session] hiding from the big swell

We hid at Pors Carns because the swell was big, and very messy – with a howling onshore at la Torche.  At PC the wind was slightly offshore and the waves were small, refracting around the point. [...]

The “Nohu” from Charlie

Charlie Loiselle from Hawaii loves building wooden boards and gives them all names inspired by the sea. Mostly fish.
” The Nohu, or scorpionfish, is a real ugly fish. Thus I named my newest design after it.”

” Latest out of the Island Dream factory (i.e. my car port). It’s a twin-fin fish with little bitty fins and minimal rocker – kind of like the “bluegill” that Jon Wegener is doing in Cali, but hollow wood. Bookmatched redwood top, lauan bottom (ripped and alternated for a better look). Solid laminate rails – this is the first board I’ve done that I didn’t strip-rail, and I don’t think I’d do it again. It’s faster, but strip-railing is lighter and…more elegant? Anyhow I’m taking it out this weekend (once the varnish coat finished drying) and will try and get some pic in action.”

It’s a 7’ twin fin fish with minimal rocker and a wiiiiiide tail. I made it for small days when it’s too mushy for an alaia, as an alternative to a longboard. We’ll see how it rides – the fins are real small, so it should slide quite a bit but “

Andy Irons death – Heart attack from drugs overdose

Yesterday the official Andy Irons (RIP) autopsy and toxicology report was released. Since his death on the 2nd November 2010, there have been a lot of rumours surrounding the cause of his untimely death. First dengue fever, then a possible prescription drugs overdose…

Andy Irons was a great surfer and will always be missed, at the time of his death his widow Lyndie was 8 months pregnant with Andy’s son to be (Andy Axel Irons).

Due to the media circus surrounding his death, a court injunction was sought in order for Lyndie to give birth in peace.

This week, a 13-page toxicology report has surfaced and two ‘independent’ forensic experts have interpreted the report.

Here’s what they concluded…

‘Heart failure primary cause of death’

Their conclusion is that Andy Irons died a natural death from a sudden cardiac arrest which was caused by a severe blockage of the main artery of the heart.

But how could that happen to a fit 32 year old surfer who could charge 15ft Teahupoo?

Well, the forensics mention a couple of things they feel contributed.

1. There is a history of heart problems in the Irons family. Andy had a grandmother who was 77 when she died of congestive heart failure, and a grand uncle who also died of heart failure…

2. Andy had contracted Typhoid fever 5 years ago, which apparently can damage the heart.

But it really was a drugs overdose…right?

In addition to the initial cause of death there were some other things they found in his blood. Tarrant County Chief Medical Examiner Nizam Peerwani, MD, lists a second cause of death as “acute mixed drug ingestion”.

Or to you and me…a drugs overdose.

Drugs found to be present in AI’s body

1. Methadone – Now the report states this is ‘an analgesic drug commonly used in the treatment of chronic pain’ (…cough, cough) Wiki states: An analgesic drug that is used as a substitute to treat morphine and heroin addiction.

2. Cocaine – benzoylecgonine present in the blood is consistent with use of cocaine at about 30 hours prior to death.

3. Xanax/ Alprazolam – A prescription drug used to treat moderate to severe anxiety disorders.

4. Methamphetamine aka Crystal Meth – One of the more nasty and notoriously addictive drugs to hit the US in recent years.

I’m not a medical expert, but I would wager if the average person consumed all those drugs they’d probably have a heart attack too…If Keith Richards from the Rolling Stones had died in the 1970s, his toxicology report could have looked pretty much like this – in fact Xanax is Keith Richards’ favourite drug…he even named his yacht after it.

What can we learn from this?

Andy Irons was a great surfer, a much-loved husband, he was a soon-to-be father and it’s a tragedy that his life was cut short, however when you consider the information in the report it does make you wonder what on earth is going on in professional surfing if someone can compete in the top ranks of world surfing and take loads of class A drugs?

What do you think? Let us know in the comments below.

A helping handplane from Mike

” Hi Grant, as part of a fundraising effort for the Christchurch Quake Victims, I was asked to make a handplane as a spot prize at the New Zealand premier of ‘Stoked and Broke’, so here it is, laminated paulownia with poker work, stain and linseed oil, built in handle (like you advised), stoked to do something fun and help raise money for those poor buggers in Christchurch.”
