Kiwi prospect Sarah Mason looking to take spot on the World Tour

Sarah Mason, New Zealand’s new teenage surf prospect, is one step closer to taking a spot on the World Tour after a personal best result in Portugal recently.

The junior sensation has already proven herself a world-beater on a senior level, contesting the secondary tour and finishing third in the six-star Billabong Pro, has lifted herself to 10th in the rankings.

The complicated qualification system will see the top 6 surfers taken to the World Tour next year – a position she seems hell-bent on taking.

Paige Hareb, her fellow New Zealander, is also set to go far with her currently coming in 5th (but 12th overall on the actual World Tour’s rankings).

Mason, who’s only 16, now has a genuine shot at joining Hareb on the World Tour and has two more six star events in Spain and Portugal in September.

She says: “I will definitely be doing more events towards the end of the year and I am looking forward to that.”

After winning a Pro Junior event in France last week and turning heads after being handed a wildcard to New Zealand’s World Tour Event, where she beat world champion Steph Gilmore, Mason went on to say: “I am really happy with a third spot and it is the best result I have had in a Star event.”
